The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Bastard TV launched

Posted by Wudmaster on 15/10/11

The Bastard Sons of Dennis have launched their own TV channel at YouTube, Bastard TV. This is separate from our Wud Records TV Channel and is an unofficial channel which Wud Records does not necessarily endorse.

We would like to wish the band the very best of luck with their new channel and we will keep every one of our visitors here at the Wud Records website informed of future developments with their Channel in our news bulletins.

At present there is only the one video uploaded there, and that is of a soundcheck at The Oddfellows, Exeter on 26th May 2011 – a test video, as it were. If you would like to visit their channel, where you can subscribe if you wish, please click here.

Dark Company: Bad Habits latest

Posted by Wudmaster on 03/10/11

Bad Habits, the all new album from Dark Company, is continuing to take shape. We have the first four tracks all finished, mixed, mastered and sounding absolutely fantastic.

We have decided to produce a number of special mixes of each song on the Bad Habits album. These special mixes will feature various different missing instruments.
This is so that musically inclined fans of Dark Company can play along on their own instruments and it will allow listeners deeper inside to hear some of the wonderful stripped-down details of Dark Company’s beautifully crafted songs. Similar to Radiohead and Frank Zappa, attention to detail is something Dark Company do superbly and is a real trademark of their music. We believe you will love listening to – and in some of your cases, playing along with – these special mixes.

In order to allow fans of the band special pre-release listening privileges, we will be constructing a special password-protected web page for Bad Habits here at Wud Records. Dark Company will then communicate the password directly to their fans through Facebook and Twitter.

You can join the Dark Company fan page at Facebook by clicking here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dark-Company and follow them on Twitter by clicking here: http://twitter.com/#!/Dark_Company

We will be removing the Beta mixes from the current Bad Habits page in due course.

Wud Records: Jim Dunlop to sponsor George’s 3mm Stubby plectrums

Posted by Wudmaster on 30/09/11

Those splendid people at Jim Dunlop have offered to sponsor George from Dark Company and Flicker and The Bastard Sons of Dennis to the tune of a regular and goodly supply of 3mm Stubby plectrums and strings.

George has used the Jim Dunlop 474R3.0 Stubby Jazz 3mm for well over 20 years and recommends it to his guitar students. He has also given away a lot of the ones that he has used as gifts to fans over the years.

A spokesperson from Jim Dunlop told us: “These plectrums are made from a special material called Lexan (originally owned by General Electrics, now Sabic) and was created for NASA, and for building construction (glazing and domes in modern architecture). Lexan is very strong, very durable, and all the while being a very light material.”

Dan at Blueprint Studios, our web design specialists, is another guitarist who uses the 3mm Stubby, although many of the musicians that The Bastard Sons of Dennis encounter on their journeys don’t use them. When a plectrum has been forgotten and George offers one of his, it is usually refused. Mr Lijkkes and Maxx refer to them as ‘Devils Toenails’ as they are hard and thick and purple.

Aside from the obvious virtues of being hard and thick and purple, George says that he has never yet broken such a plectrum, although he tends to wear away the points after a while. He says that he likes their size because he only has to squeeze one a little to fatten out his thumb and achieve a pinched harmonic. The grip has improved and become more reliable over the years. He claims the tone is sweeter and more consistent too as there is more string and less ‘clack’. A softer pick gives more ‘clack’, such as one would hear with a playing card in one’s bicycle spokes.

As the plectrum does not bend, the hand moves and the string gives way, rather than there being a compromised situation of both string and plectrum flexing under the player’s hand movement. As such the Stubby is perfectly suited for super-speedy lead runs, which can be muffled or imprecise if a softer plectrum has not had enough time to assume its proper shape in time to play the next note.

George is clearly somewhat chuffed by this development and will continue to use and endorse the Jim Dunlop 474R3.0 Stubby Jazz 3mm.

The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Sometimes

Posted by Wudmaster on 27/09/11

The Bastard Sons of Dennis have another song completed, and it is one of their oldest, dating right back to the summer of 1994. The song is called Sometimes and it has been added to their Cherry Smoke Empire collection, which you can listen to by clicking here. We have also added the song to our default music player which is widely available across the site.

If you would like to download a copy of the song from Bandcamp, you can do so by clicking here.

This song first appeared on the 1992 album Need for Not by Levitation. The name of the track on that album is Resist.

Terry Bickers was the frontman of the band Levitation and he and Mr Lijkkes were at university together. Mr Lijkkes had a hand in the writing of this song back in those days. Mr Nejsan had never heard the Levitation version of the song and created his parts independently.

This song was first performed by the Bastard Sons of Dennis at The Cavern, Exeter in the summer of 1994. They have always referred to the song as being called Sometimes. Therefore we would say that this song is by Levitation with the arrangement by The Bastard Sons of Dennis.

Mr Lijkkes tells a short ad lib tale at the start of this song that is different every time. Usually it is a rather grizzly tale about Spiderlings. This particular tale was captured in 2009 and is one of the earliest of those ad libbed tales, before the Spiderlings became a regular feature.

Sometimes has amused, entertained and moved audiences on many occasions during live performances by The Bastard Sons of Dennis. We hope you enjoy listening to the new recording of this wonderful song.

Space Goats: live at Glastonbury 1999

Posted by Wudmaster on 27/09/11

We have been digging around in the archives and unearthed a very special performance by the Space Goats playing live at Glastonbury Town Hall on 18th December 1999.

This was a unique event in Space Goats history as it was the only performance they ever did with that particular line-up of musicians and represented a rather drastic change of direction from their holistic acoustic concept extravaganzas to something much closer to heavy progressive rock.

The performance is very raw and fresh and has a number of classic moments. Many of these wonderful songs were also played previously by Laughing Sun or subsequently by Alchemeon, or both.
