Wud Records: live streaming on Twitch

Posted by Wudmaster on 09/02/23

Wud Records live streaming on Twitch is now a real thing! We have been planning on putting this into operation for some time, and now it has finally happened.

The new Wud Records channel for live streaming on Twitch is there to live stream any action that may be going on in our studios. Why not drop by and say ‘hello’? You can see and hear what we’re up to, live and as it happens, with no rehearsals or editing.

You might be privileged with a front row seat to listen in when there’s mixing or mastering going on. You could witness some amazing (or dreadful!) live musical performances as they take place. You may find somebody moving things about, fiddling with software, maintaining or repairing equipment, tidying up, and all that other usual studio stuff.

That’s not all! You might see our musicians and personnel. You may hear us working on songs by Flicker, Dark Company, Pok the Bard, The Bastard Sons of Dennis, or even one of our legacy bands. You could perhaps even be a witness to Archive material from the Wud Records cassette or CD vault being unearthed and readied for the general public’s listening pleasure.

Everything there is done with an intention of achieving a result, as time is often limited. We are happy to discuss what we’re doing with you as it happens. You could drop by to share a coffee and a conversation and see for yourself how things are done in our studios.

So how do we work this? Well, there is a very old laptop that runs internet things in the studio. It’s not a very good laptop, but it’s the only available machine at present. This means that the quality of the live stream may not always be tremendously superwonderful all the time. However, we invite you to drop by just the same, and perhaps we can upgrade that facility when more people join our community.

The studio internet connection is only made possible by using a device that allows the router to be hardwired directly through the electric mains cables. The studios are built into what used to be the strongroom of a bank.

This renders internet, radio, shovels from would be music thieves, and intercontinental ballistic missiles ineffective. There is no chance of those things, or anything else, penetrating the walls, which are deep below the ground. Specialist equipment had to be brought in to drill every single tiny little hole we needed in the walls and ceiling!

We have never connected the main studio computer to the internet. This is a deliberate decision, taken for security reasons. Such a connection cannot even be done without some different parts being installed inside the case and a screwdriver or two. None of the studio music machines are connected to the internet, although there are a couple of devices that we sometimes carry to a different building and plug in there for an update.

Do you fancy visiting us and being the proverbial fly on the wall? If you don’t have a Twitch account, it’s free, easy and quick to sign up. Here’s the link for your bookmarks. You can quickly create a free account from here too:

Due to the unpredictability of work, family and life in general, it is not possible for us to publish a schedule or regularly stream at particular times on a particular days. Instead, we shall announce on Twitter when a live stream is about to start so you can come along and join in the fun. Make sure you’re following Wud Records on Twitter to receive live streaming alerts.

Wud Records: charts pages up to date

Posted by Wudmaster on 08/02/23

The Wud Records charts pages are finally up to date! Wud Records started making the charts pages a few years ago. It’s been a low-priority project. All the same, it is still very satisfying to finally have this finished.

The monthly Wud Records chart pages stretch right back to October 2015. That was when we first joined SoundCloud and started uploading our bands’ many, many tracks at that platform.

There is plenty more music still to add too! Announcements of further additions will be made in our News service and on Twitter.

Monthly charts have been one of the features of the Wud Records website for several years by now. The first one was published in August 2016. By clicking here, you can read the assocaited News post that was published to herald its arrival.

Occasionally we would publish a chart before then, from Bandcamp statistics on facebook for example. Sometimes they were based on the original software we used for music streaming at the Wud Records website – the now long defunct Flamplayer.

One of the team would add one or two pages from time to time, when other things were going on in the Wud Records offices. It was something low key that didn’t require too much concentration to continue. Finally the pages are all up to date. We shall endeavour to keep them that way for all future charts too.

On 24th September 2018 the first chart page was published at the Wud Records website. This was for October 2015, the month when we joined SoundCloud. Around three weeks later, on 12th October 2018, we announced the beginnings of the charts pages at the Wud Records website in a News post. You can read this News post by clicking here, if you wish! :)

SoundCloud makes it very easy for its users to make compilations of whatever tracks they like. It is also a very good tool for growing a fanbase. If you happen to be a musically creative type and you’re feeling a bit underappreciated and undiscovered at the moment, why not try our handy guide for growth? Click here to open the page.

It works brilliantly, despite being six years old by now. The links may not be terribly reliable any more, but the theory is first class. We recommend you try it for yourself. After you discover that like it, you can buy us a coffee, or order some merch from our shop, or even download an album or two from our Bandcamp store to say “thanks guys”! ;-)

Only you can influence our next chart. Anything we do at those sites doesn’t get counted. That means if you hear something you like, keep playing it! Add it to a compilation. Give it a like. Leave a comment or two. Share it to your social media channels so your community has the chance to find it too. All these things are a tremendous help to a small indie label such as ourselves, and will absolutely influence the results of the month’s chart.

If you would like to see what’s been hot in all our charts pages, please click here and then select any month or year from the list on the left.

Wud Records: control room upgrade

Posted by Wudmaster on 06/02/23

A significant control room upgrade has taken place at the Wud Records studios! We have been working towards this for some time and believe it will make a big difference to the quality of the music we release.

The issue of our studio monitors has long been hampering confidence in Wud Records releases. With new audio monitors installed, we have already started to correct some of the things that are simply not quite right in a few of the mixes of tracks we have released recently. “You cannot mix what you cannot hear,” a wise man once said.

Back in the 1990s, when we were operating out of Silent Running Studios in Exeter, the equipment setup there was top quality. At that time it was a small state-of-the-art facility that was hired out to the general public, and the birthplace of Dark Company. It ran on an eight-track reel-to-reel with a sync box to drive the MIDI devices.

For monitoring we used a pair of eight inch Mordaunt Short near fills. A big stride backwards would bring the eight inch Tannoy far fills into play. For anything deep down in the audio basement, we had a quartet of massive 18 inch Peavey Black Widows to handle that.

As a result, much of what we produced and released in the 1990s transfers well to other systems. It still sounds fantastic today.

We have been working towards this control room upgrade for some time, as you can see in this news post from last July. The plan now is to remix, remaster and re-release a number of tracks that don’t quite seem to satisfy us.

New music will start being released too, finally.

Please be sure to follow our News service and Twitter. We make all important announcements there.

Often we tend to post news to our Bandcamp community first. If you want to be one of the first to hear about new releases and the various ongoing events taking place at Wud Records, you can join our Bandcamp community.

If you are not a member of Bandcamp, it’s free to sign up. Bandcamp has a fabulous ethos and offers the best deals anywhere on the web right now for musicians selling their music. Click here and a new tab will open where you can join our community and sign up, if you didn’t do so already.

Wud Records: links page updated 2023

Posted by Wudmaster on 04/02/23

The Wud Records links page has been updated! Hooray!

We did this due to the bloating that was beginning to occur in some of the categories. By creating new categories, we have been able to streamline and improve the awesome Wud Records links page.

From time to time we also check which links are still good. This has now been done. The links that have changed or moved have been edited. The ones that have vanished have been deleted.

We tend to add new links to our splendid links page as and when we come across things that seem relevant, essential or just very cool. There is no set pattern for these additions, they just happen when they do.

Please do feel free to go and check it out at your leisure! There are so many great resources for independent musicians in our links page. There are all kinds of helpful people and organisations and some wonders that we simply love. You might even want to add the Wud Records links page to your own bookmarks for later browsing, study and research.

If you happen to be the curator of something wonderful on the internet, something that you believe needs to be added to our fabulous links page, write to Sam. His email is info@wudrecords.co.uk and he will be glad to help. If you were to show him that you already included a link to Wud Records among your own links collection, that would certainly enhance your prospects.

There is plenty of action going on at Wud Records just now. We will soon have more news items to bring you on various musical and other Wud Records activities. Please make sure to follow our News service and Twitter for all such announcements.

If you would like to visit our links page of awesomeness, please click here.

Wud Records: January 2023 top ten published at SoundCloud

Posted by Wudmaster on 02/02/23

The top ten tracks for January 2023 on Bandcamp and SoundCloud have been published in a new compilation.

How Did We Calculate The January 2023 Chart?

The algorithm we use gives greatest weight to downloads and reposts, then likes and comments (active engagement) over plays (passive engagement).

When somebody reposts a track, that gives it the opportunity to be heard by a potential new fan. This is always a tremendous help for creative souls!

We have combined the stats from both SoundCloud and Bandcamp for the new chart. This is because it will not be long until all our Bandcamp tracks are also published at SoundCloud.

Radio play and songs published at other platforms are omitted from the statistics. There may be further developments when our music is added to more platforms.

Archive tracks and bonus tracks are also ignored, as are likes and comments from people who clearly didn’t listen to the music. We have ways of knowing these things.

Only you, the listener, can influence our February 2023 playlist. So if there is a track you particularly like, keep playing it! Leave a comment, repost it and share it to your social media feeds! It absolutely can make a difference.

Thanks For All Your Help!

Massive thanks go out to everybody who helped to support all of us during January 2023 by listening to, commenting on and reposting our bands’ tracks on SoundCloud, Bandcamp and elsewhere.

All the wonderful fans of our bands who supported us with downloads from Bandcamp are especially appreciated. You genuinely help us keep the fires burning and collectively we thank you for that most graciously. May you be blessed by the gods of rock n roll! :)

We would also like to say a special thank you to all the splendid people on Twitter who have been enjoying and reposting our tracks to their followers. All the support and positive feedback has been incredibly heartwarming for us all. It makes our endeavours here seem worthwhile.

Thank you very much to everyone who bought items from our merch store. Anyone who shares a photo of themselves with their Wud item on social media will receive an extra goody from oursevles once we have seen it and shared the photo on to our community as well.

There are numerous upcoming changes planned for the Wud Records merch store, so please keep an eye on our News service and Twitter for future announcements.

Flicker’s merch store opened recently and has been contributing to the Wud Records coffers. Dark Company will be opening their own merch store soon.

Who’s In The January 2023 Top Ten?

The Bastard Sons of Dennis

Congratulations to The Bastard Sons of Dennis! They enjoyed a particularly splendid month in January 2023, dominating the chart by occupying half of the available places. All five of their songs on the new chart come from their splendid Cosy Lube Turtle album.

Cosy Lube Turtle has been available on Bandcamp for some time. We recently released the Cosy Lube Turtle album to SoundCloud as well, and sent it away to a distributor for global distribution. More news on this will follow soon.

Climbing back up from number three to number one on the new chart is Astronomy. This is a beautiful and haunting song composed by the Bouchard brothers, Joe and Albert, and Sandy Pearlman. It is the final track of Blue Öyster Cult’s 1974 Secret Treaties album, and an absolute masterpiece of progressive rock composition.

The version of Astronomy by The Bastard Sons of Dennis is a little more produced in the opening bars than their live performances. They would often end a show with Astronomy, introducing it as a song that was famously covered by Metallica. “We wrote it, of course; ahem, cough…” Chuck would quip.

A re-entry at this month‘s number three is She’s as Beautiful as a Foot. This is another Blue Öyster Cult cover, which originates from the Long Island quintet’s 1972 eponymous album, Blue Öyster Cult. The original version is highly psychedelic.

When covered by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, Chuck tunes his guitar to DADGAD. The twinkly noises at the beginning are created using an old computer fan and its assorted danglesome appendages. She’s as Beautiful as a Foot was often performed first in a set of Bastard Sons of Dennis songs, due largely to the tuning.

Last month‘s chart topper moves down to number four on the chart this month. Seven Screaming Diz-Busters is a highly esoteric and extraordinary piece of progressive rock composition, beautifully interpreted by The Bastard Sons of Dennis. It is a song for which they were well known.

Originally it was released by Blue Öyster Cult on their 1973 Tyranny and Mutation album. It was big crowd favourite at a live performance by The Bastard Sons of Dennis and you can enjoy watching a video of them playing it live by clicking here.

Bouncing back into our chart at number five is the second re-entry and the fourth Cosy Lube Turtle song. This one is a cover of Blue Öyster Cult‘s Wings Wetted Down, from the 1973 Tyranny and Mutation album.

Wings Wetted Down is a masterfully crafted piece of songwriting, with its clever key changes and all its vocal and instrumental melodic hooks. It is considered a deep cut among BÖC fans. The version performed by The Bastard Sons of Dennis is largely true to the original, with the addition of a riff section that Derek solos over.

Rising up from number nine to number seven we see another song from the Cosy Lube Turtle album. This is the opening track, Dominance and Submission. Originally released by Blue Öyster Cult on their 1974 Secret Treaties album, The Bastard Sons of Dennis would indulge in various acts of tomfoolery during a live performance of this song. Derek would introduce the band and thank the venue and sound engineer. He would also encourage the crowd to join in with the cries of “Dominance!”, “Submission!”.

In the long pauses before “It will be time!”, Derek and Chuck would spin their guitars upside down. Stuck on the back of Chuck’s guitar was a large sign that read “Throw panties now!”, and on the back of Derek’s was a similar sign that read “If no panties, bras!” Very few undergarments were ever actually tossed onto the stage, apart from on one occasion when somebody had brought a big bag full of old knickers and distribued them to the audience. Both the stage and the band were covered in them.

Flicker

Flicker enjoyed a very strong month to kick off 2023 and achieved three entries on the new Wud Records chart. All three came from their incredible 2002 album At Least 1000 Words.

Welcome to the Family is a non-mover on the new chart, remaining at number two. Welcome to the Family is a wonderful latin-jazz-rock-fusion instrumental. It builds from its acoustic guitar beginings to a heady climax of guitar feedback and noise. There is a lovely bass solo from Dave, who also plays all the keyboard parts with outstanding aplomb and sensitivity.

Welcome to the Family was inspired by The Godfather by Mario Puzo and a new chord from a Portuguese sea shanty. It is one of Flicker‘s most enduring and popular releases.

Ascending one position this month is Oily Road Hideaway at number five. This is a delightful and catchy latin jazz dance. Oily Road Hideaway is the only track from Flicker‘s first album with programmed drums. It also has twin bass guitars playing in unison, with Dave panned to the left on his Fender and George panned to the right on the Plank.

A very unusual instrument called a string fish appears towards the end of the tune. This is a home-made creation, from the workshop of Pyg frontman Martin Dearmunn. A string fish is a little like a pair of dulcimers or zithers, joined together at an acute angle. The strings are vertical and played with fingers, like a harp. To play a scale, the player must alternate between the left and right side, like a kalimba.

Week Five is up one position to number nine on the new chart. Week Five has a remarkably live-sounding feel for a studio recording. It is a breezy feel good latin rock dance number with summer vibes that wouldn’t sound out of place in a set from Carlos Santana.

Week Five is a piece about looking forward to the future and feeling excited about forthcoming adventures and new experiences. It begins with a sample from the Prague metro and as the tune builds it becomes progressively more intense.

Dark Company

Sinking down four places to number eight this month is Dark Company’s awesome alternative / hard / psychedelic rock and funk song Dancing In The Dark. The version you can hear is still work-in-progress.

Pete wrote the lyrics in 1989 and the song was originally performed by Alien Heat. In Dancing In The Dark, Pete describes his memories of going nightclubbing in the West End of London after being revved up by his good friend Billy.

Pete was not actually terribly keen on the song and would always refer to it as “Farting in the Park”.

Back in the days of Alien Heat, Dancing In The Dark included Graham’s drum solo. This was when everyone in the band would roll a cigarette (or something a little more flavoursome) while he performed it, hopefully having the deed done and the object lit in time to carry on with the song at the drum solo’s conclusion.

Laughing Sun

It’s been a while since the awesome psychedelic ensemble Laughing Sun managed a Wud Records chart appearance, but they are back this month with their earthy, organic rendition of Marc Bolan’s Cosmic Dancer. Laughing Sun would perform several covers over the years, and Cosmic Dancer was the first they ever performed live. This version features the redoubtable Cliff Smith on lead guitar.

Laughing Sun‘s sound was very homely and DIY. There was no drummer in the early days. Rhythm was provided by bongos, fur drum and assorted home made percussion devices. Laughing Sun’s live performances would be lit by an oil drop projector and band members would showcase their versatility by frequently swapping instruments between songs. Band membership was somewhat fluid, with numerous Wud personnel and many others coming and going during the course of the band’s lifetime.

* None of our other acts made it onto the January 2023 chart. *
